Richard Hutson

Richard Hutson (born July 9, 1748 in Prince William Parish, Province of South Carolina , † April 12, 1795 in Charleston , South Carolina ) was an American politician .

Hutson studied law. After joining the bar, he practiced in Charleston. Hutson served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1776 to 1779, 1781, 1782, 1785, and 1788 . He was also a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1778 and 1779 . In 1780 he was captured by the British at Charleston and was released the following year.

Hutson was 1780-1782 member of the Legislative Council of South Carolina , and after 1782 to 1783 Deputy Governor ( lieutenant governor ) of South Carolina. From 1783 to 1784 he was the first mayor of the city of Charleston.
