John Harvie

John Harvie (born 1742 in Albemarle County , Colony of Virginia , † February 6, 1807 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American lawyer, builder and politician .

Harvie was born in 1742, the oldest of five children of Scottish immigrants, on a farm in Albemarle County. His parents were John Harvie (1706-1767) and Martha Gaines Harvie (1719-1802). He was a friend of Thomas Jefferson . His father became his legal guardian after the death of Thomas' father, Peter Jefferson , in 1757 . John studied law and was admitted to the bar before settling in Augusta County . There he opened a successful legal practice. In 1774, after the Battle of Point Pleasant, he was empowered to negotiate a peace treaty with the Shawnee tribe . Then Augusta County sent him to the Virginia Congresses (the revolutionary legislature ) in 1775 and 1776 . The following year the Chamber sent him as a delegate to the Continental Congress , where he also worked in 1777 and 1778. During this time he signed the Articles of Confederation . During the remainder of the American Revolution, he served as a buyer and supply organizer for the Virginia militia and the Continental Army . In 1780 he moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he worked as a land developer and builder. Harvie built a number of buildings in Richmond and carried out public works in the area. During the inspection of one of these construction sites (the Gamble House) he died of an unfortunate fall from a ladder. He was buried in the family grave on his estate, which later became part of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
