Francis Lightfoot Lee

Francis Lightfoot Lee (born October 4, 1734 in Stratford , Colony of Virginia , † January 11, 1797 in Menoken, Virginia ) signed the United States' Declaration of Independence for Virginia and is thus one of the American founding fathers .

Life

Lee received a very good private education. In 1758 he was elected to the Virginia House of Representatives, where he remained in office until 1775. He was a radical supporter of the independence movement. At the side of Patrick Henry he fought against the stamp law . He called for a general convention and convention for Virginia in 1774, in which he attended. He was a delegate at the First Continental Congress , where he remained in office until 1779. He was a member of the Virginia Senate until his retirement .

Lee was a brother of Arthur Lee , Richard Henry Lee, and William Lee, and a distant relative of the later Southern General Robert Edward Lee .
