William Ellery
William Ellery (* 22. December 1727 in Newport , Colony of Rhode Iceland and Providence Plantations , colony of the Kingdom of Great Britain ; † 5. February 1820 in Newport , Rhode Iceland, United States ) was the representative for Rhode Iceland signatories of the Declaration of Independence of the United States and is one of the founding fathers of the United States .
He graduated from Harvard College at the age of 20 and then worked as a merchant, customs collector and clerk to the Rhode Island General Assembly. Ellery opened a legal practice in 1770. He was active with the Rhode Islands Sons of Liberty , replacing the late Samuel Ward in the Continental Congress in 1776 and serving on the Navy Committee and Foreign Relations Committee. He became a judge on the Rhode Island Supreme Court . In 1785 he had become an abolitionist . He was the first Customs Clerk at Newport Harbor after the Constitution came into force and remained so until his death in 1820.
Ellery's father was also named William Ellery . He was Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations from 1748 to 1750 .
