Francis Lewis

Francis Lewis (born March 21, 1713 in Llandaff , Wales , Kingdom of Great Britain , † December 30, 1803 in New York City , New York , USA ) was a British-American merchant and is one of the signatories of the United States' Declaration of Independence for New York one of the founding fathers of the USA .

Born in Welsh, he was educated in Scotland and attended Westminster School in London . He attended a trading house in London and moved to New York in 1734. He took part in the French and Indian War as an assistant to General Hugh Mercer and was captured by the French in 1756 and brought to France. After his return to the Thirteen Colonies , he became active in politics and was elected to the Continental Congress in 1775 . His Long Island property was destroyed during the American Revolutionary War.

His son Morgan Lewis served in the Rebel Army during the American Revolutionary War and later held many offices in New York State.
