Edward Langworthy

Edward Langworthy (* 1738 in Savannah , Province of Georgia , † November 2, 1802 ) was an American teacher and delegate to the Continental Congress from Georgia. He signed the Articles of Confederation .

Career

Langworthy was a foundling and grew up in the Bethesda Orphanage , where he also went to school. He later taught at the same school. Throughout his life he assisted in the creation of the Georgia Council of Safety and became Secretary to the Council on December 11, 1775 . The Georgia General Assembly sent him to the Continental Congress in 1777, where he served until 1779. During this time he signed the Articles of Confederation. In 1785 he moved to Baltimore , Maryland . He bought part of The Maryland Journal & Baltimore Advertiser and became its editor. In 1787 he sold his share and was active as a teacher of classical literature at the Baltimore Academy until 1791 . Around 1791 he moved to Elkton , where he was busy writing down Georgia's history. Langworthy returned to Baltimore in 1795, where he became Clerk of Customs for Baltimore, a position he held until his death. He died of yellow fever in 1802 and was then buried at the Old Episcopal Church .
