John Hanson (born April 3, 1715 in Port Tobacco , Charles County , Province of Maryland , † November 22, 1783 in Prince George's County , Maryland ) was an American politician and delegate of the Continental Congress from Maryland.

Often referred to as the first President of the United States , because he served as the first President of the United States, gathered in Congress under the articles of confederation for a full term, from 1781 to 1782 . With the office of the same name, which was created with the United States Constitution of 1787, Hanson's office is not comparable. Accordingly, the counting of presidents of the United States usually begins with George Washington , who was the first to be elected to this office after the ratification of the new constitution in 1789.
