Nathaniel Gorham (born May 27, 1738 in Charlestown , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  June 11, 1796 ibid) was an American politician, eighth President of the Continental Confederation Congress and one of the founding fathers of the United States with the signing of the United States Constitution .

Nathaniel Gorham was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1738, the son of a shipworker. After attending school and doing a few small jobs in his hometown, Gorham apprenticed to Nathaniel Coffin, a merchant, in New London , Connecticut, in 1754 . After being familiarized with the import-export trade, he returned to his homeland in 1759 and opened his own business. In 1763 he married Rebecca Call, with whom he had nine children.

Political career

Gorham began his career as a notary in 1770. The following year he was elected to the Legislature of the Thirteen Colonies , and three years later, in 1774, he became a delegate to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, a provisional government in the American Revolutionary War . He became a member of the Continental Congress in 1782. He became President of the Confederation Congress on May 15, 1786 after John Hancock had resigned. He was replaced by Arthur St. Clair in 1787 .
