John Blair Junior

John Blair Jr. (* 1732 in Williamsburg , Colony of Virginia ; † August 31, 1800 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician and from 1789 to 1795 a judge at the Supreme Court of the United States .

He was born into a prominent family in Virginia. His father temporarily held the office of governor. his great-uncle had founded the College of William and Mary , which Blair himself attended until 1754, when he went to England for a year to study at Middle Temple . After the French and Indian War , he was elected to the House of Burgesses, the lower house of the Virginia Parliament , in 1766 . From 1771 to 1775 he was parliamentary assistant in the Royal Governor's Council .

When the Revolution began, he helped draft the Virginia Constitution. In 1777 he was elected by Parliament as judge at the newly formed Virginia General Court and in 1779 took over its presidency.

In 1787 he was a member of the Philadelphia Convention and two years later, on September 24, 1789, George Washington nominated him as a Supreme Court Justice . Two days later, the Senate confirmed his nomination. In 1795 Blair resigned for health reasons.

John Blair Jr. was a member of the Freemasonry Association and served as Grand Master of the Virginia Grand Lodge from 1778 to 1784 .
