Thomas Fitzsimons
Thomas Fitzsimons (born around 1741 in Ireland , † August 26, 1811 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician and one of the founding fathers of the United States .
Career
Thomas Fitzsimons immigrated to the United States and then settled in Philadelphia . There he took a job as a clerk in a so-called counting house , a term that was previously used for the accounting division of a company. During the later American Revolutionary War , he commanded a company of volunteers. He was also a member of the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783 . After the war, he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1786 and 1787 . He also served as a delegate to the constituent assembly . Fitzsimons was elected to the first US Congress as a pro-administration candidate and re - elected to the two subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1789 to March 3, 1795. When he tried for re-election in 1794 in the 4th US Congress , he suffered a defeat. In subsequent years he was President of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Curator of the University of Pennsylvania, and Founder and Director of the Bank of North America .
He died in Philadelphia in 1811 and was buried there in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Churchyard .
