Eldred Simkins

Eldred Simkins (born August 30, 1779 in Edgefield , South Carolina , † November 17, 1831 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1818 and 1821 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Eldred Simkins was taught at a private school in Willington . He then studied at South Carolina College , later the University of South Carolina in Columbia . After a subsequent law degree at Litchfield Law School in Connecticut and his admission to the bar in 1805, he began to practice in Edgefield in his new profession.

Politically, Simkins became a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In 1806 he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, and between 1810 and 1812 he was a member of the State Senate . He was then Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1812 to 1814 . After the resignation of Congressman John C. Calhoun , he was elected in the sixth constituency of South Carolina as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took up his new mandate on January 24, 1818. After being re-elected in the regular congressional elections of 1818, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1821 . There he was chairman of the Committee on Control of Public Spending.

In 1820 Simkins renounced another candidacy. After that he worked as a lawyer again. He also worked as a planter on the family's own plantation. From 1828 to 1829 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina. He died on November 17, 1831 in Edgefield, his birthplace.
