Thomas F. Hartnett
Thomas Forbes Hartnett (born August 7, 1941 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 1981 and 1987 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Thomas Hartnett attended public schools in his home country including Bishop England High School and the College of Charleston . Between 1963 and 1969 he was a member of the US Air Force Reserve . From 1981 to 1987 he was a member of the flight division of the South Carolina National Guard. Since 1987 he has been chairman of Hartnett Realty Co.
Politically, Hartnett became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1965 and 1973 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives ; from 1973 to 1981 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1972 to 1980 he was a delegate at the Republican party conventions in his home state, and between 1980 and 2000 he was also a delegate to all Republican National Conventions .
In 1980, Hartnett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the First Constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Mendel Jackson Davis of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1981 . Hartnett was the first Republican to hold this mandate since George W. Murray , who represented the first constituency in Congress between 1896 and 1897 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1987.
In 1986 Hartnett renounced another candidacy. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of South Carolina. In 1992 he ran for the US Senate just as unsuccessfully . With 46.95 percent of the vote, however, he was only slightly defeated by the democratic incumbent Fritz Hollings . Today he lives in Mount Pleasant .
