Lewis C. Carpenter
Lewis Cass Carpenter (born February 20, 1836 in Putnam , Connecticut , † March 6, 1908 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician . Between 1874 and 1875 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Lewis Carpenter attended public schools in his home country. He later moved to New Jersey where he worked as a teacher. In 1863 he was appointed New Jersey State School Inspector. Carpenter also wrote articles for various newspapers, including New York City . In 1864 he moved to Washington . There he worked for the Ministry of Finance . At the same time he studied law at Columbian College , now George Washington University . After being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession. In Washington he also worked as a newspaper correspondent.
In 1867 Carpenter moved to Charleston , South Carolina. There, too, he became involved in the newspaper business by publishing two newspapers. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1868 and 1873 he served on the staff of US Senator William Alfred Buckingham from Connecticut. After the resignation of Congressman Robert B. Elliott in 1874, Carpenter was elected to the US House of Representatives as his successor in the third constituency of South Carolina. There he took up his new mandate on November 3, 1874. By March 3, 1875, he ended the legislative period in Congress that his predecessor had started . Then he was replaced by Solomon L. Hoge .
In 1876, Carpenter ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Two years later he moved first to Denver and in 1879 to Leadville , Colorado. There he also worked in the newspaper business. In 1880 he headed the Colorado Census Bureau. After that he was postal inspector until 1883. From 1883 to 1890 Carpenter was active in the insurance industry. After that he worked as a lawyer again. He died on March 6, 1908 in Denver and was buried there.
