Franklin H. Elmore

Franklin Harper Elmore (born October 15, 1799 in Laurens County , South Carolina , †  May 29, 1850 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of South Carolina in both chambers of Congress .

Elmore graduated from South Carolina College in Columbia in 1819 , studied law , was inducted into the bar in 1821, and began practicing law in Waterboro . Between 1822 and 1836 he served as the district attorney for the South Carolina District Court; In addition, he was a member of the governor's staff from 1824 to 1826 with the rank of colonel .

After the resignation of Congressman James H. Hammond , Elmore took his place in the House of Representatives from December 10, 1836 . He was confirmed in office once and remained a member of parliament until March 3, 1839. He was then from 1839 to 1850 President of the State Bank of South Carolina; an appointment as envoy of the United States in Great Britain by US President James K. Polk he refused.

On April 11, 1850, Franklin Elmore became a member of the United States Senate ; he had been appointed to succeed the late John C. Calhoun . Elmore died in Washington on May 29 of the same year. He was buried in Columbia.
