William Smith (politician, 1751)

William Smith (born September 20, 1751 in Bucks County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  June 22, 1837 in Spartanburg , South Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1797 and 1799 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Life

In 1765, William Smith came to South Carolina with his father. In Spartanburg he bought a plantation which he managed. During the War of Independence , he made it to the position of captain in the Continental Army . He later became a major in the South Carolina Militia. After the war, Smith held various political offices in South Carolina. Between 1785 and 1797 he was a district judge. From 1790 to 1796 he was a member of the South Carolina Senate . He joined the Democratic Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson .

In 1796 Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in the sixth constituency of South Carolina, where he succeeded Samuel Earle on March 4, 1797 . Since he refused to run again in 1798, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1799 . After his time in the House of Representatives, William Smith returned to his plantation, which he continued to cultivate. Between 1810 and 1810 he was again a member of the South Carolina Senate. He died on June 22, 1837 in Spartanburg.
