J. Gresham Barrett

James Gresham Barrett (born February 14, 1961 in Westminster , Oconee County , South Carolina ) is an American politician . From 2003 to January 2011 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

J. Gresham Barrett first attended Westminster High School and then graduated from The Citadel Military Academy in Charleston until 1983 . Between 1983 and 1897 he was an officer in the US Army . There he reached the rank of captain . Then he managed the family's own furniture business. He was also on the board of several clubs and organizations such as the Westminster Rotary Club , the local Boy Scouts, the Westminster Chamber of Commerce and the local Red Cross .

Politically, Barrett joined the Republican Party . Between 1996 and 2002 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . There he was a member of several committees. In 2000 he supported the presidential campaign of George W. Bush . In the congressional elections of 2002 he was in the third constituency of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he succeeded the in on 3 January 2003 Senate exchanged Lindsey Graham took. On January 3, 2011, he resigned from Congress.

Barrett is considered one of the most conservative congressmen. Most recently he was a member of the Finance Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs . But in June 2010 he lost in the internal party ballot for the nomination against the tea party movement supported Nikki Haley .

Barrett is married. He has three children with his wife Natalie. The family lives in Westminster.
