Quod provinciale

Quod provinciale ( Latin "The Provincial Council" ) is a papal encyclical by Pope Benedict XIV . It dates from August 1, 1754 and is addressed to the bishops and missionaries of the ecclesiastical province of Albania. With this apostolic letter , which bears the subtitle “On the use of Mohammedan names for Christians”, Benedict XIV warns again clearly against this and explicitly orders that no Catholic should be given a Muslim name.

Benedict XIV refers to the 1703, still under his predecessor Clemens XI. , held a particular council in the ecclesiastical province of Albania . At this partial council, the Pope recalls, it was decided that no Turkish or Muslim names should be used as baptismal names for Christians . In addition, the Pope recalled his encyclical Inter omnigenas to the Bishops of Serbia of February 2, 1744, in which he confirmed the decisions of the Albanian National Council and demanded compliance with the provisions also for Serbia. In the further remarks, the Pope explains the reasons that would have led to this ban. He admonished the bishops and missionaries in Albania who, despite the ban, would have allowed Mohammedan or Turkish baptismal names.
