With the encyclical Peregrinantes ( German  pilgrim ) of May 5, 1749, Pope Benedict XIV announced that he had declared 1750 to be the Holy Year for the Roman Catholic Church .

Announcement of a jubilee year

In this announcement, he first addresses the believers who are on the move as “ pilgrims ” and seekers and who have sometimes got lost in a certain way. Therefore they should be moved to repent, they should not be punished and scourged. The Church therefore offers repentance , forbearance, and forgiveness , and grants great indulgences at all times . For this reason, he writes, he will continue the old tradition and declare the year 1750 "Holy Year in the Eternal City of Rome ". This holy year should be a year of renewal, penance, reconciliation and grace ; it should be led for a whole year from the birth of Christ .

Benedict XIV lays down the implementing regulations and liturgical rules, he lists the basilicas of Rome ( St. Peter's Basilica , San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore ) in which the full indulgence is granted. He asks the faithful to make a pilgrimage to Rome as intrepid "soldiers of faith", while he calls on the secular rulers to support the pilgrims materially and financially.

Preparation for the jubilee year

On the occasion of the preparations, Benedict XIV published an Apostolic Constitution on June 26, 1749 , in which he reflects on the development of pilgrimages in a historical retrospect and sets out several implementing provisions and makes orders.
