Even the first apostolic letter of Pope Ubi primum of September 8, 1914 was a call for peace in the face of war. During this time he exercised restraint regarding further encyclicals. The most famous text of this Pope was the Apostolic Letter to the heads of the warring states Dès le début of August 1, 1917, his most courageous peace initiative. The apostolic letter Maximum illud on Catholic missions (1919) is also of lasting importance .

Pius XI. In 1938 commissioned the Jesuit John La Farge , together with Gustav Gundlach , to write another encyclical entitled Humani generis unitas "on the unity of the human race and against racism". Some of their basic ideas found their way into the inaugural encyclical of the successor, essential statements of the draft only later became common property of church teaching (cf. Nostra aetate ).

Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of Mary in heaven on November 1, 1950. Programmatic encyclicals on Marian themes come from the popes of the 20th century, who turned out to be ardent devotees of Mary:
Apostolic Letter of Paul VI : Signum magnum (1967), Recurrens mensis october (1969) and Marialis cultus (1974)
Mission Encyclics

Social cyclics
The growing together of church and society established new fields of activity for the Catholic Church, the result was the development of an independent social doctrine and the emphasis on the social responsibility of everyone and the individual. Not all published encyclicals have a pronounced socio-political character and so their designation has also established itself as “ social encyclicals ”. In addition, two apostolic letters were published, the content of which can be assigned the character of a social encyclical.
