The Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls

Ad plurimas ( lat. "To the diverse" ... and terrible calamity) is an encyclical of Pope Leo XII. published on January 25, 1825, on the occasion of the great fire in the Patriarchal BasilicaSaint Paul Outside the Walls ”.

Leo XII. lamented in his encyclical that a devastating fire on July 16, 1823 had destroyed the basilica and that his predecessor Pius VII was on his death bed during the same period . The destruction was such that the remaining walls also had to be torn down. The Pope announced that, with international help, the new building of the church should be carried out, true to the old construction plans. The Pope also regretted that the basilica would not be available as an indulgence church for the coming jubilee year .
