Michal Sivek (born January 21, 1981 in Náchod , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . From 1997 to 2008 he played for HC Sparta Prague in the Czech Extraliga and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League .

Career

Michal Sivek began his career in the offspring of HC Sparta Prague , for whom he made his debut in the U18 extra league at the age of 15. He played exclusively for the Juniors Sparta until the 1997/98 season, before making his debut for Sparta's professional team in both the Extraliga and the European Hockey League . Until the beginning of the 1998/99 season he was part of the squad of his home club before he moved to HC Velvana Kladno . During the NHL Entry Draft in 1999 he was selected by the Washington Capitals in the second round as a 29th player. Therefore, he decided to move to North America and was signed by the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League . Despite performing well, he returned to Sparta a year later.

In July 2001, Sivek was handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins together with Kris Beech and Ross Lupaschuk , who in return sent Jaromír Jágr and František Kučera to Washington. In the following season he went first for the farm team of the Penguins, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League , on the ice, before he returned to Sparta after 25 AHL games. After his return he won his first Czech championship title in the 2002 playoffs with Sparta .

In the 2002/03 season he made his debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and completed a total of 38 NHL games before he was sent back to Wilkes-Barre. In the following season he was only able to complete 22 games for Wilkes-Barre due to a finger injury. In the summer of 2004 he decided to return to Sparta Prague, for which he completed over 220 games in the Extraliga and reached two other championships in the following four years.

After the 2007/08 season he ended his career due to many injuries and has since worked as a scout for Sparta.

International

At the international level, Sivek was very successful as a junior player, while as a senior player he only completed five internationals for the Czech national team . Sivek took part in three U20 and one U18 junior world championships. He won the gold medal in 2000 and 2001 . At the U18 European Championship in 1998 , Sivek was the tournament's third-best scorer.
