The Santa Fe is one of the main thoroughfares in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires .

overview

In 1774 the Avenida, then still known as Calle San Gregorio , was the northern border of Buenos Aires. After the British invasion of the Río de la Plata in 1806 , it was named after Pío Rodríguez. Rodríguez should be honored for his role in defending the city. In 1810 Argentina declared its independence from Spain and the Avenida was renamed Calle Estrecha (the "Narrow Street"). In 1822 it was widened for the first time and received its current name. As part of the urban redevelopment, initiated by the mayor Torcuato de Alvear , it was expanded again in the 1880s. Avenida Santa Fe has been a one-way street since 1967 and runs from west to east.

course

Avenida Santa Fe begins in Retiro , at the southern end of Plaza San Martín . From here, the Avenida offers a view of the Art Deco style Edificio Kavanagh and the Plaza Hotel and leads past the Palacio Paz (now a public building). The avenue then heads west past the Olivetti building from 1964, one of the first international-style buildings in Buenos Aires, and across the wide avenue 9 de Julio . Next up is the building of the Argentine Scientific Society in Greek Revival style and the Teatro Regina in Art Deco style. From Avenida Callao , the Avenida leads through the Recoleta district . This section is a popular shopping area in Buenos Aires.

Behind Avenida Callao , Avenida Santa Fe meets the former Teatro Gran Splendido , which was converted into the El Ateneo bookshop in 2000 . After Avenida Pueyrredón , line D of the Buenos Aires Metro has been running under Avenida Santa Fe since the 1920s .

In the Palermo district , the Avenida initially runs along the botanical garden , the zoo and the Plaza Italia with the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi and then passes the area of La Rural , the agricultural fair in Buenos Aires. The Avenida Santa Fe ends at the Ministro Carranza station , from where it continues geographically as Avenida Cabildo and extends to the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
