The Avenida Callao is one of the main thoroughfares in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It runs through the districts of Balvanera , San Nicolás and Recoleta .

overview

Torcuato de Alvear came in 1880 to be mayor of a city with the plan reorganization along the lines of Baron Haussmann for Paris . The narrow street network of Buenos Aires was to be loosened up by laying boulevards in a west-east direction (approximately every six blocks, which corresponds to almost 700 meters) and in a north-south direction (every ten blocks). Part of this plan was Avenida Callao, named after Callao in Peru , which was widened in the 1880s.

It has been a one-way street since 1967 and runs north from Avenida Rivadavia past the Plaza Congreso, the Congress Palace and the Confitería del Molino . Three blocks further, she passes the Hotel Bauen , a modern-style high-rise building that became famous when it closed in 2001 and was subsequently taken over and reopened by the employees who have managed it successfully to this day. After two more blocks you can see the church "Iglesia del Salvador". It was built by the Argentine architect Pedro Luzetti between 1872 and 1887.

At the intersection with Avenida Córdoba you will find the bookstore Clásica y Moderna , which opened in 1938 and was the first in Buenos Aires to also house a café. A hundred meters further, the avenue leads past the Plaza Rodríguez Peña and the Palacio Pizzurno. At the corner of Calle Pacheco de Melo you can see an Art Deco apartment building.

Avenida Callao ends on Avenida del Libertador , one of the city's most important main streets. The Italpark amusement park was located here from 1960 to 1990 , and now Parque Thays is located here .

The two-kilometer long street is not only an artery for commuters, but also interesting because of its Belle Époque architecture , although much of it has been lost since the 1950s. The city administration is now considering monument protection measures for 85 buildings along Avenida Callao.

The Avenida Callao is mentioned in the tango "Balada para un loco" by Astor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer . The song says: “Ya sé que estoy piantao, piantao, piantao, ¿no ves que va la luna rodando por Callao, y un coro de astronautas y niños con un vals, me baila alrededor? ... ".
