Course of the Avenida Córdoba

The Avenida Cordoba is one of the main thoroughfares in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is a good eight kilometers long and crosses a total of nine districts.

overview

Like Avenida del Libertador and Avenida Alvear , Avenida Córdoba was also an urban planning project by the mayor at the time, Torcuato de Alvear . As part of this project, the Avenida Córdoba was widened in the 1880s. In the 1930s, the D line of the Buenos Aires metro was largely built under the Avenida. In 1967 it became a one-way street, and has been running from east to west ever since, making it one of the main rush hour rush hour routes for commuters who work in the San Nicolás business district.

Course and important structures

Avenida Córdoba begins on Avenida Eduardo Madero as a continuation of Cecilia Grierson Street in Puerto Madero , in the east of the city. It then runs through the business center and forms the border between Retiro in the north and San Nicolás in the south. Here you can find Microsoft's South American headquarters , which opened in 2000, and the Alas building . The latter was built in the early 1950s during the reign of Juan Perón for the Argentine Air Force and, at 42 stories, was the tallest building in Argentina until 1995. A few blocks further, Avenida Córdoba crosses the pedestrian street Calle Florida . On the southeast corner is the Galerías Pacífico shopping center , which was built in 1889 as a counterpart to the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché . The eclectic facade in the style of Beaux Arts is reflected in the building of the Association of Navy Officers opposite.

At the intersection of Maipú Street is Café St. James , where the writer Jorge Luis Borges was a regular and lectured on English literature in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1950s, Avenida 9 de Julio was extended beyond Avenida Córdoba. At the intersection of the two avenues there are two fountains that originally stood on the Plaza de Mayo . The Italian car manufacturer Fiat also built its Argentine headquarters at this intersection in 1965.

Palacio del Aguas in the Balvanera district

One block further, Avenida Córdoba meets Libertad Street. There you can see the Plaza Lavalle , the Teatro Cervantes and the Templo Libertad , the most important synagogue in Buenos Aires. Further to the west, the Avenida passes the Palacio del Aguas Argentina (Eng .: Water Palace), a pumping station that was built in 1877. Opposite is the Sáenz Peña teacher training college. On the Avenida you will also find various buildings of the University of Buenos Aires , including the Faculty of Medicine and the University Clinic as well as the Faculty of Economics. The Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Música (Argentina) (National Conservatory ) is also here.

After the intersection of Avenida Callao , Avenida Córdoba runs between the districts of Recoleta and the Jewish quarter of Balvanera . This is where the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina is located , the original building of which was destroyed in 1994 by a terrorist attack that has not yet been resolved.

The Avenida Córdoba then continues past Almagro , Villa Crespo and Palermo . The Avenida takes a north-westerly direction between Villa Crespo and Palermo. The section of the Avenida along Villa Crespo is also known for its many clothing and shoe shops. Avenida Córdoba ends at Avenida Federico Lacroze , but geographically as Giribone Street it leads eight blocks further into the Chacarita district .
