The Avenida del Libertador is one of the main thoroughfares of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It runs over 25 km from Plaza San Martín in Retiro to the suburb of San Fernando .

history

Inspired by the modernization of Paris by the city planner Baron Haussmann , the then mayor of Buenos Aires, Torcuato de Alvear , took office with similar plans in 1880. At the time, Buenos Aires was a rapidly growing city with narrow, checkerboard streets. Torcuato de Alvear planned a boulevard that would connect Retiro on the northeastern outskirts with the growing (then) suburbs of Recoleta and Palermo to the west of it. For this purpose, Bella Vista Strasse was widened and lengthened. When it was inaugurated in 1885, it was named after Torcuato de Alvear's father, Carlos María de Alvear .

The Avenida Alvear quickly became the most desirable address in Buenos Aires, where it made numerous magnificent villas, some of which exist today. But it also quickly became one of the busiest streets in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century.

Together with the planning of the Estación Retiro station , Torcuato de Alvear's successor in office, Adolfo Bullrich , developed a multi-lane boulevard from Retiro to Palermo. This should run parallel to a railway line and to the east of Avenida Alvear in order to give the residents of Palermo access to the train station and to relieve the Avenida Alvear.

In 1906 the street was opened as "Avenida Vértiz", in memory of the former viceroy Juan José de Vértiz y Salcedo . In 1950, by order of President Juan Perón, it was renamed Avenida del Libertador to commemorate the centenary of the death of General José de San Martín , the liberator (Spanish "Libertador") of Argentina, Chile and Peru.

In the late 1930s, the 15 km long Route 195 was built as an extension of Avenida del Libertador to San Fernando and crosses the districts of Belgrano and Núñez as well as the suburbs of Olivos and San Isidro . Due to regular traffic jams during rush hour, the toll “Arturo-Illia expressway” was opened in 1996, which runs parallel to Avenida del Libertador.
