Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo
The Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo is a horse racing track in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is located in the Palermo district , on Avenida del Libertador , opposite the Polo Stadium .
The track is 2,400 meters long and is one of the most famous horse racing tracks in the country.
The Hipódromo was inaugurated on May 7, 1876; the first national derby was held here in 1884.
On the occasion of the opening ceremony, there were insufficient trains and trams to carry the large crowd who wanted to attend the event. Around 10,000 spectators witnessed "Resbaloso" winning the first race on the track.
In 1898 the Tattersall de Palermo was opened to sell racehorses.
The original grandstand was replaced in 1908 by a Beaux Arts style grandstand designed by Louis Faure-Dujarric.
In 1947 a technique called photochart was introduced for target photos . As a result, the exact moment when the horses crossed the finish line was captured photographically and doubts could be dispelled more easily.
In 1971 the racetrack was floodlit, making races possible into the night.
In 2012 and 2015, the hippodrome hosted the Gran Premio Latinoamericano , an important Group I race in South America.
