life and work

Dénes Kovács began his career as a violinist at the age of five in the Fodor Music School near Dezső Rados, and from 1944 he was a student of Ede Zathureczky's master class . Between 1951 and 1961 he was concertmaster of the Hungarian State Opera and in 1955 he won the London Carl Flesch Prize. For 47 years he taught generations of budding musicians at the Budapest Music Academy (now the " Franz Liszt Music Academy "). Between 1967 and 1971 he was general director and from 1971 to 1980 rector of the academy.

His game was characterized by simplicity, discipline, clarity and simplicity. He was a somewhat brooding, witty person who watched himself closely. As a soloist he played his way through almost the entire classical work, but he also added violin concertos by contemporary composers to his repertoire. A large number of recordings have preserved his masterful game to this day.

As rector of the music academy , he donated the music academy's grand prize and promoted the education of exceptionally talented children. In memory of former great Hungarian violinists, he organized competitions, increased the quality of musical training, separated teacher training from that of artists in accordance with university tradition and was ultimately responsible for setting up the independent chamber music department.

"With his passing an important chapter in the history of the Music Academy comes to an end, but at the same time he remains a role model for his students and future generations" said András Batta , Director of the Franz Liszt Music Academy, on the occasion of his death.

Dénes Kovács played on a Guarneri (" Guarnerius del Gesù 1742"), after his death Barnabás Kelemen played on it.
