Carlos María de Alvear
Carlos María de Alvear y Balbastro (born October 25, 1789 in Santo Ángel , † November 3, 1852 in New York , USA ) was an Argentine politician and military .
Life
De Alvear was born in the northern part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata as the son of the Spanish nobleman Diego de Alvear and the Creole mother María Balbastro. His place of birth, Santo Ángel, was part of the Misiones province at the time , but is now part of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .
Between January 9, 1815 and April 15, 1815 he held the position of so-called Director Supremo in the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata , today's Argentina . From July 1, 1820 to July 12, 1820 de Alvear was governor of Buenos Aires .
The Department General Alvear in the province of Mendoza in western Argentina is named after him.
De Alvear's final resting place is in La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires . The headland Punta Alvear in the Antarctic is named after him.
