United Provinces of the Río de la Plata
United Provinces of the Río de la Plata ( Spanish Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata ) was the name for the territory of today's states Argentina , Uruguay and the Bolivian Department of Tarija between the May Revolution ( Revolución de Mayo ) 1810 and 1831.
It emerged from the viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata , which was broken up by the South American Wars of Independence in 1810 . For a short time (1813-1816) the state was called Provincias Unidas de Sudamérica . In German, the short form United States of La Plata is also used, but the obvious translation United Provinces of South America is hardly used.
In 1831 this name was replaced by the name of the Argentine Confederation ( Confederación Argentina ), which however only referred to the current state of Argentina. This designation was used until 1861, when the state of Buenos Aires, independent from 1852, rejoined the renamed state as a province. Since then, this state is called Argentine Republic ( República Argentina ) or shortly Argentina ( Argentina called). According to the Argentine constitution , however, all three names - Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata , Confederación Argentina and República Argentina - are still official names of Argentina.
