The Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo (German: National Museum of Decorative Arts) is a decorative arts museum in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires . It is located in the former Palacio Errázuriz on Avenida del Libertador in the Palermo district .

overview

The museum has its origins in the marriage between two prominent members of better society at the turn of the century: in 1897, Matías Errázuriz, son of Chilean immigrants, married Josefina de Alvear, the daughter of Mayor Torcuato de Alvear .

In 1911, the couple commissioned the French architect René Sergent to build a house for the time after Errázuriz's activity as ambassador in Paris. The ornate building in neoclassical style also inspired the Bosch family to build a similar house in the neighborhood. The US Ambassador's residence is located there today . In 1916 the house of the Errázuriz-Alvear couple was completed, and two more years were used to furnish the house with many antiques and objets d'art.

When Josefina de Alvear died in 1935, the widower bequeathed the house to the Argentine government on the advice of his children. The museum was opened in 1937. Little has changed since then. Over 4,000 objects can be seen in the twelve exhibition rooms, including paintings by El Greco , Jean Honoré Fragonard and Édouard Manet , sculptures from antiquity and by Auguste Rodin , East Asian art, tapestries, porcelain, furniture from the 18th century and a collection of miniature Art. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by temporary exhibitions, and choir concerts and courses take place regularly.

The museum building is also the seat of the Academia Argentina de Letras .
