history

After the Battle of Caseros in 1852 and the fall of Juan Manuel de Rosas , his extensive property in the north of Buenos Aires was expropriated. In 1862 the city administration decided to make this property available for a public park. At the initiative of Congressman Vicente Fidel López and President Sarmiento , work began in 1874. The name of the park was intended to commemorate February 3, 1852, the date of Rosas' fall.

The park was designed by the city planner Jordán Czeslaw Wysocki and the architect Julio Dormal and inaugurated on November 11, 1875. The economic boom in Buenos Aires at this time helped to transfer the park area to the city in 1888, after which the French-born Carlos Thays was commissioned to expand and beautify the park. The work took ten years to complete and was completed in 1912, including the rose garden. Thays also designed the zoo , the botanical garden and the adjacent Plaza Italia .

In 1927 the Andalusian Patio and the Monument for the Four Argentine Regions were added, in 1951 the Velodrome was added and in 1966 the Galileo Galilei Planetarium . The Museo de Artes Plásticas Eduardo Sivori is located on the Avenida de la Infanta Isabel, which runs through the park .
