The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA) (German: National Museum of Fine Arts) is an art museum in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . His collection is one of the most important in Latin America. In 2004 a branch was opened in Neuquén .

history

The museum opened on December 25, 1895 in the building on Florida Street that is now the Galerías Pacífico Shopping Center . The first director was the painter and art critic Eduardo Schiaffino . In 1909 the museum moved to Plaza General San Martín , in a building that was originally built as the Argentine pavilion for the 1889 World's Fair in Paris , and after the exhibition was dismantled and transported to Buenos Aires. At this location, the museum was part of the Exposición Internacional del Centenario from 1910. As part of a redesign of Plaza San Martín, the building was demolished in 1932 and the museum moved to its current location in 1933 on Avenida del Libertador in the Recoleta district . This was originally built in 1870 as a pumping station and was rebuilt for its new purpose as a museum building by the architect Alejandro Bustillo.

In 1961 the building was expanded with an annex for temporary exhibitions, and in 1980 a pavilion for Contemporary Argentine Art was added. With an area of ​​1,536 m², this is the largest of the 34 halls of the museum, which has a total of 4,610 m² of exhibition space. The museum's permanent collection includes 688 larger and more than 12,000 smaller works, such as sketches, fragments, ceramics, etc. a. The museum also has a library with 150,000 volumes and an auditorium for lectures.

On the ground floor there are 24 exhibition rooms for an international collection from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The library is also located there. The first floor has eight rooms that display some of the most important 20th century Argentine painters, including Antonio Berni , Ernesto de la Cárcova , Benito Quinquela Martín , Eduardo Sívori , Alfredo Guttero , Raquel Forner , Xul Solar and Lino Enea Spilimbergo . On the second floor, which was only completed in 1984, you can see photographs and sculptures.

In 2004 an offshoot was opened in the Patagonian city ​​of Neuquén . The building was designed by the architect Mario Roberto Álvarez . The building has four exhibition halls with a total of 2,500 m², 215 works of art and an auditorium. In addition to the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions are also held.
