Benito Quinquela Martín (born March 1 - 1890 in Buenos Aires , † January 28, 1977 there ) was an important Argentinian painter .

Life

Quinquela Martín's birthday cannot be precisely determined. He was abandoned at an orphanage on March 21, 1890 . Written on a note that was found with the child stood: "This child was baptized and his name is Benito Juan Martín." . The nuns who found him deduced from his appearance that he was about three weeks old. So March 1st was chosen as his birthday.

When he was six years old, he was adopted by Manuel and Justina Molina de Chinchella and took his stepfather's last name . The surname was later changed to Spanish and was Quinquela .

At the age of 14 he attended an undemanding evening school for drawing in La Boca . During the day he worked on the family's coal farm. When he was 17, he entered the Pezzini Stiatessi Conservatory , where he stayed until 1920.

In 1910 he began to show pictures in smaller art exhibitions , mainly in La Boca and its surroundings. In 1920 he received the second prize at the Salón Nacional ( Spanish , "national exhibition"). After an exhibition in Mar del Plata in the same year, he was sent as the Argentine representative to an exhibition in Rio de Janeiro , at which important Brazilian personalities were also present, such as: B. the President Epitácio Pessoa .

In the 1920s, Marcelo T. de Alvear and his wife were very fond of the works of Quinquela Martín. Because of this admiration, a lasting friendship developed.

In his works, he dedicated himself to the now picturesque atmosphere of the poor district and port area of ​​La Boca in the south of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. A large collection of his works can be seen today in the Museo Quinquela Martín .

Quinquela Martín also had the idea of ​​painting the houses on El Caminito Street in La Boca in bright colors.
