Máximo Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear Pacheco (born October 4, 1868 , † March 23, 1942 ) was an Argentine politician and president . He belonged to the Unión Cívica Radical .

life and career

Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear was born in 1868 as the son of Torcuato de Alvear and grandson of Carlos María de Alvear . Like his father and grandfather, he took up a political career and was the Argentine President from October 12, 1922 to October 11, 1928. During his tenure, Argentina experienced a strong economic boom, which shortly afterwards ended in an economic crisis.

After the coup against Hipólito Yrigoyen on September 6, 1930, de Alvear took control of the party and became the leader of the opposition. After a failed revolt in 1932, he was arrested and deported to Europe. In 1935, de Alvear returned to Argentina and was again nominated as his party's presidential candidate, but lost to Roberto María Ortiz .

De Alvear saw himself as a member of the "aristocracy" of Buenos Aires. He was married to the opera singer Regina Pacini .
