Stepfather

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A stepfather (from mhd. Stief , from ahd. Stiof , from germ. * Steupa, * steupaz , trimmed, step, similar to the idg. * Steup- , push, hit, stick, stump) is a man who takes the place of the Father without being the birth father of the child. In the traditional sense of the term, the stepfather is either married to the birth mother or the foster father of the child.

Since around the end of the 20th century, a man has also been referred to as a stepfather when he takes on fatherly duties for the child (cf. social parenthood ) without being married to the mother. As an adoptive father , he also takes on the role of the legal father .

Rare and rather humorigem undertone, the term prey father used the most on concerns that a child in conquering his mother by the prospective stepfather to its prey belongs.
