With his encyclical Miserentissimus redemptor (Latin: Most Merciful Redeemer ), dated May 8, 1928, Pope Pius XI attacks . again on the subject of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and gives this encyclical the subtitle "On the generally owed reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus" [ de communi expiatione sacratissimo Cordi Iesu debita ].

About devotion to the Sacred Heart

First of all, the Pope recalls the encyclical " Annum sacrum " (May 25, 1899) by Pope Leo XIII. in which he explained the origin of the Christ the King and Sacred Heart. Leo XIII. declared that "it was Jesus Christ himself, not the apostles or disciples , who called himself King ".

After that Pius XI. on his encyclical " Quas primas " (from December 11, 1925), with which the solemnity of the kingship of Christ (in addition to the Feast of the Sacred Heart ) was introduced into the liturgical calendar. Pius XI. then directs his thoughts to Saint Margaret Maria Alacoque († 1690) and describes her life and history as an origin of love for the heart of Jesus.

Call to atonement

The Pope notes that in the past the "devotion to the Heart of Jesus has lost intensity and that it is now appropriate to initiate the " reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus " with prayers and devotions" and therefore he urges the believers to: To make atonement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus not only for their own wrongdoings but also for those of others .

One way of making reparation to the heart of Jesus, the Pope urged the believers, would be "atonement requests and prayers for a full hour, which is properly called the Holy Hour " . It was also taken for granted that the holy hour should be kept before the Holy Eucharist according to the original message of St. Margaret Mary .

Part of the liturgy

Pius XI. gives the Feast of the Sacred Heart (Friday of the week after Corpus Christi ) the highest liturgical rank (such as Christmas and Easter ) and creates a new form of the Mass including the Officium with octave . The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is equivalent to the highest feasts of the church year . Pope Pius XI related the worship of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar to the atonement for sins . The whole subject of this encyclical marks the great need to implore God's mercy, especially through the Holy Eucharist.

The encyclical closes with a prayer of reparation, Iesu dulcissime .
