Haurietis aquas ( You will draw water , according to Isa 12: 3) is an encyclical written by Pope Pius XII. published on May 15, 1956 on the occasion of the centenary of the Sacred Heart Festival . It is the last letter from a Pope to date on the veneration of the Sacred Heart .

background

Significantly influenced by Margareta Maria Alacoque , who died in 1690 , Pius IX. In 1856 the Festival of the Sacred Heart of Jesus became binding for the entire Catholic Church .

In the 1950s, Catholic theologians developed a new understanding of the veneration of the Sacred Heart . This basic direction was also reflected in various papal letters, especially in the encyclical Haurietis aquas of May 15, 1956. Theologians closely linked the devotion to the Sacred Heart with the basic truths of the Christian faith, especially with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and the sacraments. The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus takes place on variable dates, namely on Friday eight days after Corpus Christi (the third Friday after Pentecost, or the first "free" Friday after the Corpus Christi octave). The celebration is often on the third Sunday after Pentecost , e.g. B. in Tyrol, where the Sacred Heart Festival is celebrated with special customs (e.g. Sacred Heart Fire , parades, processions, etc.). The first Friday of each month is called Sacred Heart Friday.
