Appetite sacro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Appetente sacro  on the spiritual benefits of the holy fast is an encyclical of Pope Clement XIII. which was published December 20, 1759.

With a view to the Lent of the coming church year, the Pope explains something about the spiritual value of fasting, which is a suitable means of strengthening oneself against temptation. In his exhortation , he urged the bishops to teach the faithful the spiritual benefits of fasting and to teach them about the purpose of fasting. Acts of repentance alone do not remove attachment to sin ; rather, believers should reconsider the past and avoid falling back into the same sins. Penance and fasting are closely related.
