Cum summi apostolatus

With the encyclical Cum summi apostolatus ( dt .: ... because the highest apostolate ) of December 12, 1769, Pope Clement XIV took up the tradition of the Holy Year . In his remarks “on the necessity of a universal anniversary”, he referred to the jubilee years held every 25 years (the next jubilee year to be carried out would thus take place in 1775). In his closing remarks, he also pointed out that he would send another letter at the same time as this encyclical.

Inscrutabili divinae sapientiae

With the same date (December 12, 1769), Clement XIV published the encyclical Inscrutabili divinae sapientiae (English: ... inexplicable divine wisdom ). The encyclical was very closely related to "Cum summi apostolatus", because in this further apostolic letter the Pope explained the need for an anniversary and announced it for 1775. He gave the bishops details of the implementation. At the same time he laid down liturgical rules and explained the possibilities of indulgences . He instructed that this letter to all parishes had to pass, and that was to be begun preparations.

Salutis nostrae

Finally, Salutis nostrae (German: Our salvation ) is the official encyclical for the proclamation of the Holy Year 1775, it dates from April 30, 1774. It gave further details on the liturgy, the scope of indulgences and the timing.

Jubilee year 1775

Clemens XIV. Could no longer witness the holy year of jubilee propagated by him, he died on September 22, 1774. The jubilee year was finally given by Pius VI. opened and accompanied.
