Levate is an encyclical written by Pope Pius IX. , published October 27, 1867, subtitled "On the Suffering of the Church".

Pius IX lamented and condemned the political events in Italy , Russia and Poland in strict and harsh, not exactly diplomatic words . He complained about the expropriation of parishes, the removal of a bishop and the persecution of Catholics in Poland. He also criticized the decrees issued by the tsarist government in Saint Petersburg , which would restrict the freedom of the faithful. He went particularly strongly to court with the incidents in Italy, where real “ devils ” and “bad men” were at work, whom he accused of profitability and impiety .

He asked the Catholics in their dioceses to pray intensely for three days , admitting that in the overseas dioceses these days of prayer should be held within one year. In connection with this period of prayer, if properly attended, he issued a full indulgence .
