With the encyclical In Suprema Petri sede ("On the Supreme Throne of the Apostle Peter") of January 6, 1848, Pope Pius IX tried . to advance unity between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

prehistory

For more than five hundred years, the Orthodox Churches had fallen out with the Roman Catholic Church. A dynamic of its own had developed in the churches and the gap between the two was growing ever deeper. The Orthodox and the Roman Catholic had with the case since 1453 Constantinople clearly grown apart. With a renewed advance on the part of the Pope, this encyclical was intended to begin the understanding, willingness to talk and the desired reunification.

An attempt at reunification

This encyclical therefore demands the reunification of the separated Eastern Church with Rome. Conferences and publications are proposed for this purpose. Pope Pius IX reminds of the similarities in liturgy and faith . He emphasizes that the liturgy has a common language (Latin and Greek are meant) and that it is the language spoken by the apostles .
