He was also principal trombonist with the Yorkshire Imperial Band for four years, during which time they won both local, British and national competitions.

In 1979, Bousfield became the youngest recipient of the Shell / London Symphony Orchestra Music Scholarship. In 1980 he became a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, where he played under the conductor Claudio Abbado for two years . In 1988, at the age of 24, Bousfield became principal trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), replacing Denis Wick . Denis Wick said to Ian Bousfield at the time: "he is an extremely accomplished player and what he is short on by way of experience, if he is, he is bright enough to get together very quickly." Basically translated: He is an incredibly accomplished player and what he still lacks in experience, if something is missing, he will quickly make up for with his intelligence. (Interview with the Trombonist magazine of the British Trombone Society ).

Bousfield became a trombone teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in 1992 , where he has been an honorary member ever since.

In September 2000 he accepted a new position as solo trombonist with the Vienna State Opera / Vienna Philharmonic . His coordinated colleague is Dietmar Küblböck .

In March 2007 the world premiere of the trombone concerto "Stargazer", which the British composer Jonathan Dove wrote for Bousfield, took place. Bousfield played the world premiere accompanied by the LSO under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas . In September 2007 he was one of the jurors of the ARD music competition in Munich , along with Branimir Slokar, Michel Becquet and other trombonists .

In September 2012 he left the Vienna Philharmonic in order to concentrate on his future career as a soloist and conductor in addition to his professorship for trombone at the Bern University of the Arts .
