Derek Bourgeois
Derek David Bourgeois (born October 16, 1941 in Kingston upon Thames , † September 6, 2017 in Poole ) was a contemporary British composer and arranger .
Life
Bourgeois graduated from the University of Cambridge with a very good degree. He then studied composition with Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult .
He published 116 symphonies, more than 30 concerts, various other large orchestral works, two operas and a musical. In the spirit of Paul Hindemith, he also devoted himself to amateur music and composed more than 30 works for brass band and six symphonies for wind orchestra .
From 1970 to 1984 he was a lecturer at Bristol University . In 1984 he became musical director of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain . He also conducted the Sun Life Brass Band from 1980 to 1983. In 1988 he founded the National Youth Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain . In 1990 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Bristol Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1993 he became musical director of St Paul's Girls' School in London . In July 2002 he moved to Artà on Mallorca and worked there as a composer for some time. Since 2009 he lived again in England, in Wool , Dorset .
Bourgeois died on September 6, 2017 at the age of 75 years to cancer .
