Niko Kranjčar [ ˈniːkɔ ˈkraɲtʃaːr ] (born August 13, 1984 in Zagreb , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian football player . He was under contract with the Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers until March 2018 and has been without a club since then.
Birth and childhood
Niko Kranjčar was born in Zagreb in 1984 as the son of soccer player Zlatko Kranjčar . After his father moved to Rapid Vienna , the family moved to Vienna . The father ended his career in 1990. The family then returned to Croatia. Kranjčar grew up in Zagreb.
Career

Kranjčar started his career at Rapid Vienna . After the family returned to Croatia, Kranjčar joined the Dinamo Zagreb offspring . He made his first appearance for Dinamo Zagreb in 2001 at the age of 16. He scored his first goal three months before his 17th birthday. At the age of 18 he became the youngest team captain in the history of the Croatian championship.
In January 2005, Kranjčar moved to Hajduk Split for 1.5 million euros . In 2007 he moved to the English Premier League for Portsmouth FC for 5.2 million euros . In 2008 he won the FA Cup with Portsmouth .
In the summer of 2009 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur and played there with his national team- mates Luka Modrić and Vedran Ćorluka . After losing his regular seat at Tottenham to Gareth Bale , he decided to leave the club.
After a transfer to Werder Bremen failed, the Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiew signed Kranjčar during the preparation for the Euro 2012 . The fee was seven million euros.
At the beginning of September 2013, various European media reported the change (loan) of Kranjčar to the English second division side Queens Park Rangers . At QPR, Kranjčar met a familiar face from the old days, his old and new trainer Harry Redknapp . This already trained Kranjčar at two other English clubs, Portsmouth FC and Tottenham Hotspur. They won the FA Cup with Portsmouth FC in 2008 . For the club from London he played a total of two seasons as a loan player. After the loan ended, the contract with Dynamo Kiev was terminated. From March to May 2016, Niko Kranjčar played in the USA for New York Cosmos before moving to the Glasgow Rangers . He played there until his contract was terminated in March 2018.
National team
Kranjčar was part of several Croatian national teams before he made his debut for the senior team in a friendly against Israel (1-0) on August 18, 2004 under his father Zlatko . He was a regular during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup and scored two goals. He was in the starting line-up in all three preliminary round matches.
Even after his father's dismissal as a coach, Kranjčar played regularly in qualifying for the 2008 European Championship and scored two goals. The most important thing he achieved in the last group game against England . Croatia won the game 3-2, so England did not qualify for the European Championship. In the group games against Austria (1: 0) and Germany (2: 1) he was in the starting line-up, in the last group game against Poland (1: 0) he was substituted on. In the quarter-final match against Turkey (1: 3 i. E.) he was back in the starting line-up. He scored one goal in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and four goals in qualifying for Euro 2012 . In the three preliminary round matches at the EM, he was only used as a substitute.
