Jonathan Dove (born July 18, 1959 in London ) is a British composer.

Life

Dove, son of an architect couple, studied composition with Robin Holloway in Cambridge. After graduating, he worked as a song accompanist, repetitor, animator and arranger. In Glyndebourne , where he had assisted in an opera project, he received his first composition commission. From 2001 to 2006 he was Artistic Director of the Spitalfields Festival.

Create

Dove's catalog of works includes more than 20 operas, choral works, instrumental and orchestral music as well as incidental music for the National Theater in London, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the New York Shakespeare Festival.

The airport comedy Flight , composed in 1998, premiered at the Glyndebourne Festival and gave Dove his breakthrough. Two operas written especially for television reached an audience of millions: When She Died… (2002) is about the reactions to the death of Princess Diana (born Diana Spencer ), and Man on the Moon (2006) is about Buzz Aldrin , the second human on the moon. Two commissioned works for Opera North in Leeds / Yorkshire have also reached German opera audiences: The Adventures of Pinocchio, based on the children's book by Carlo Collodi , premiered in Leeds at Christmas 2007, the German premiere under the title Pinocchio's Adventure took place in 2008 at the Chemnitz Opera House . Swanhunter , a fantasy short opera based on motifs from the Finnish Kalevala epic, had its world premiere in the same houses in 2009 and its German premiere in 2011.

Dove is particularly committed to cultural work at the local level. With “community operas” like The Palace in the Sky (2000) he brings people of different origins and backgrounds together to create a musical project together.

Dove was also commissioned to write compositions for public celebrations. His music accompanied the millennium celebrations at the Millennium Dome in London and, in June 2000, the opening of Millennium Bridge (London) , which crosses the Thames between St Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art .
