Ubi primum (Pius IX, 1849)

Ubi primum is an encyclical from Pope Pius IX. , it was published on February 2, 1849 and is subtitled "On the Immaculate Conception ".

With this encyclical Pius IX directs. the preparations for the development of a church dogma . He also refers to the statements of his predecessor Pope Gregory XVI. who has already commented on some questions. Like Gregor, Pius had received many inquiries and suggestions.

Pius IX announced that he had set up a commission made up of cardinals , bishops , priests and other clergymen . This commission should develop the theological , historical and religious foundations and examine them according to the interests of canon law . He now awaited their report in order to be able to initiate the decision-making process, but at the same time asked his confreres for theological and pastoral contributions.
