Quanto conficiamur

Quanto conficiamur moerore by Pope Pius IX. is the encyclical on indifference and the publication of false doctrines and was published on August 10, 1863.

With this encyclical Pius IX turns. to the Italian episcopate, and herein means the publication of false doctrines as an emergency and an insult; he points out that faith must not deviate from Catholic teachings. He describes the expansion of false doctrine and the indifference with which it is met as a source of evil and an attack on the Church. The opponents of faith should not become victors over feelings of duty, love and respect. He urgently exhorts the Italian episcopate to turn with all its might against foreign influences and false teachings. He calls on them to defend themselves against lies, slander and blasphemy, because these are a tool of hell.

Specifically, he says: “We all know that those who are afflicted with insurmountable ignorance of our sacred religion, if they carefully keep the commandments of the natural [moral] law written by God in the hearts of all people if they are ready to obey God and if they lead a virtuous and dutiful life, through the power of divine light and grace, can attain eternal life. For God, in accordance with his infinite goodness and mercy, will not allow anyone who is not guilty of willful wrongdoing to suffer eternal punishment. However, the Catholic dogma is equally well known that no one outside the Catholic Church can be saved, and that those who stubbornly oppose the authority and definitions of that church and who stubbornly support the unity of the Church and the Successor of Peter, the Roman Pope, remain separated (to whom the Savior has entrusted the care of his vineyard), cannot obtain salvation. "

Regarding natural law and the attainment of eternal life, he says: “It is well known that those who, through no fault of their own, do not know our holy religion, but observe the natural law and its commandments engraved by God in the hearts of all people, are ready to obey God and to lead a righteous, upright life that can attain eternal life through the working power of divine light and grace ”.
