Exultavit cor nostrum is an encyclical (November 21, 1851) written by Pope Pius IX. with which he addressed the extraordinary Holy Year , which will soon begin on December 25, 1851, and the expected effects of this jubilee year ( Note: The Holy Year was announced, but not officially opened in Rome ). He expressed his thanks to all the confreres, in whose dioceses the jubilee year was held on behalf of them, and praised their loyalty to God , since these times are very difficult, he emphasized what we had together. It was important for the Pope to explain that this time of comfort and joy strengthened the spirit and faith . But, he stated, joy and sadness were closely related, because the social developments, the unrest and the “wild war against everything Catholic ” would not have subsided. He therefore called for the public prayers to be continued and for grace to be sought with full zeal in religious devotion and piety.

In the encyclical Ex aliis nostris published on the same date , he laid down the norms and rules of indulgence.
