Unokichi Tachibana

Unokichi Tachibana ( Japanese 橘 右 之 吉 , Tachibana Unokichi ; born January 23, 1950 in Asakusa , Tokyo ), real name: Hideo Yoshida ( 吉田 秀 男 , Yoshida Hideo ), is a Japanese calligrapher in the Tachibana Yose style ( 橘 流 寄 席 文字 , Tachibana-ryū Yose-moji ) of the Edo style for Kabuki .

Private life

Graduated from Japan Design College in graphic design.

From 1965 student of Ukon Tachibana , master of the Tachibana style.

1969 Approval as an authentic narrator of the writing styles and granting of the pseudonym “Unokichi Tachibana” by Ukon Tachibana. Design of posters for several state theaters and theaters.

1975 Foundation of the company "Mojipro AG". Building his own world of calligraphy and characters.

Nowadays, Unokichi is not only engaged in traditional work such as writing the posters for the Yose (cabaret), but also in designing lettering and posters such as B. for the Otori Shrine in Asakusa , the Shibamata Taishaku Shrine in Katsushika , the Asakusa Tourist Association, the Kyoto Tourist Association and the East City NOREN Association. 2009 Event "Unokichi Tachibana in Vienna " for the Japan-Austria Year 2009 on the occasion of the 140th year of the contract between Austria and Japan. Planned and organized by his son Shinsuke Yoshida , there were three events: an exhibition in the Japanese Information and Culture Center of the Japanese Embassy in Austria, lectures at the University of Vienna and memory lessons at the Japanese School.

His work

He is a calligrapher and creates lettering of all kinds in the Edo style, a typeface that emerged from the Edo merchant culture around 300 years ago . It is important to him to keep old traditions alive with his work and to integrate them into modern everyday life through new creations. At the event in Europe and America, he will write the European name or other words with Japanese characters in the Kabuki style if requested. When choosing the characters, special attention is paid to their meaning and the most suitable characters are selected.
