Singulari nos is an encyclical from Pope Gregory XVI. , with which he wrote again on June 25, 1834 "about the errors of Lamennais ".

Against political and ecclesiastical liberalism

With his encyclical Mirari vos of August 15, 1832, Gregory XVI. condemns political liberalism and the thoughts of the Lamennais. With this new papal circular, the Pope particularly condemned Lamennais's "Paroles d'un croyant" (French: The Speeches of a Believer), he accused him of misusing the Holy Scriptures and accused him of inciting the believers, the Pope also called the required modern freedoms “madness”.

Reaction in Belgium

After the revolution (1830/31) in Belgium , the Belgian episcopate began to hide the liberal and democratic ideas of the Lamennais from the Catholic public, especially since they wanted to preserve their independence from the new Belgian King Leopold I and the Holy See . At the same time, it was also a question of proceeding cautiously towards Lamennais' supporters and avoiding them rebelling against the Belgian bishops . That is why the Belgian bishops initially did not disseminate the two encyclicals "Against Liberalism" and the "Errors of Lamennais". It was only in 1837 that the episcopate felt in a position to respond to Lamennais' ideas, to condemn them and at the same time to pronounce a ban on Freemasonry .
